Overview
The 14 October 2026 Daily Current Affairs edition covers two fresh, examination-relevant developments: the Union Cabinet's decision on continuation and restructuring of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), and the official release of provisional Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data for September 2026. Both items were announced through primary government sources on 14 October and were checked against the final 1-13 October editions to avoid repeating an earlier milestone.

Polity and Social Welfare - NSAP Continuation and Revised Support
The Union Cabinet approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) for five years, from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total outlay of Rs 53,428 crore. The decision was reported by the Press Information Bureau on 14 October 2026. NSAP is a centrally assisted social-security programme associated with Article 41 of the Constitution and was launched on 15 August 1995.
The Cabinet also approved new names for NSAP and its main components. NSAP will be known as the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana. The old-age, widow, divyangjan and family-benefit components were given corresponding names: Pradhan Mantri Vridhavastha Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Vidhawa Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Divyangjan Pension Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Parivar Labh Yojana.
The most substantive change concerns assistance for divyangjan beneficiaries. The central assistance is to be Rs 375 per month for ages 0-79 and Rs 625 per month for ages 80 and above. The benchmark-disability criterion is revised from 80% to 40%, and the minimum age condition begins from birth. The old-age, widow and family-benefit schemes continue in their existing form.
The status must be stated precisely: this is a Cabinet-approved continuation and policy revision, not a claim that every revised guideline is already operating. The PIB release says guidelines will be finalised and implementation will take place within three months. The current milestone is therefore the approval and announced framework, while later implementation should be tracked separately.

Economy and Official Data - WPI for September 2026
The Office of the Economic Adviser released the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for September 2026 on 14 October 2026. The WPI series uses 2022-23 as its base year. The all-commodities year-on-year inflation rate was 11.39% provisionally, compared with 9.92% in August 2026. The all-commodities index rose from 110.8 in August to 112.5 in September.
Among the major groups, September inflation was 8.67% for Primary Articles, 25.85% for Fuel and Power and 9.76% for Manufactured Products. Fuel and Power therefore recorded the highest inflation rate among the three major groups in this release.
The WPI Food Index, which combines the relevant food components from the primary-articles and manufactured-products groups, carried a weight of 24.99% and recorded 8.66% inflation in September, up from 7.05% in August. The release also notes that the September response rate was 83.4%, so the September estimates are provisional. By contrast, the July 2026 index and its inflation rate of 9.78% were final after the later data response was incorporated.
This is a new official statistical release, not a retrospective report. The monthly schedule normally releases data for a reference month on the 14th of the following month, so the September reference period and the 14 October publication date should be kept distinct in answers.

Exam Focus
For NSAP, remember the five-year period, the Rs 53,428 crore outlay, Article 41, the 1995 launch and the distinction between Cabinet approval and later implementation. Do not describe the revised names or assistance rates as fully implemented before the guidelines and implementation stage.
For WPI, keep the base year, provisional status and major-group rates separate. WPI is an official wholesale-price index, and its September 2026 release is a current statistical milestone even though the measured prices relate to the September reference month.
