Overview

The 12 October 2026 Daily Current Affairs edition covers two dated developments with direct value for APSC, ADRE, Assam Police, Assam TET, SSC, Banking and Railway preparation. The selected items are a first-year implementation update for a national food-security mission and a government-backed technology-development agreement in AI-enabled drug discovery. Both are anchored to a material milestone available by 12 October 2026, rather than to a routine event or an older announcement being presented as new. Economy and Agriculture - Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses

The PIB backgrounder published on 11 October 2026 reports the first-year progress of the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses. The mission was launched on 11 October 2025 and is a six-year programme covering 2025-26 to 2030-31, with a financial allocation of Rs 11,440 crore. The current-affairs milestone for this edition is the official first-year performance and implementation update, not a new launch.

The mission aims to raise domestic pulse production to nearly 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31 and improve yield to 1,130 kg per hectare. It focuses on stronger production, seed access, processing and assured procurement, particularly for Tur, Masur and Urad. The plan includes 87.5 lakh free seed kits, 126 lakh quintals of certified seeds, an expansion of the pulse area by 35 lakh hectares to a targeted 310 lakh hectares, and a cluster approach covering 489 districts. These are programme targets and planned interventions; they should not be described as fully achieved results.

The current 2025-26 performance figures in the backgrounder are important because they provide a measurable implementation snapshot. Pulse production rose to 274.09 lakh tonnes in the 3rd Advance Estimates for 2025-26, compared with 256.83 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. The cultivated area increased from 277.20 lakh hectares to 286.46 lakh hectares, while productivity rose from 926 kg per hectare to 957 kg per hectare. The word advance matters: these are estimates for the reference agricultural year, not a final audited production figure.

The report also records a 31.52% decline in pulses imports, from Rs 46,427.60 crore in 2024-25 to Rs 31,793.59 crore in 2025-26, and a 13.40% increase in pulses exports, from USD 855 million to USD 969.53 million. For processing, 528 units had been allocated to States and Union Territories in the first phase, while the mission envisages 1,000 processing units. The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) are authorised to procure 100% of Tur, Masur and Urad from willing and registered farmers for four years from 2025-26 to 2028-29.

For examinations, distinguish the mission's long-term targets from its current estimates and reported progress. The official update is relevant because it connects a major food-security policy with current production, trade, processing and procurement indicators. It does not establish that the 2030-31 target has already been achieved.

Science and Technology - TDB-DST Support for VIGOR AI Drug Discovery

On 12 October 2026, the Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology, signed an agreement with Peptris Technologies, Bengaluru, to support the project VIGOR: Advancing AI-Discovered Molecules from Bench to Clinic. The agreement represents a government-backed technology-development and translational-research milestone. It is not evidence that a drug has been approved, launched commercially or proven clinically.

The project has a total cost of Rs 172 crore, with Rs 86 crore in financial support from TDB under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The support is structured through Optionally Convertible Debt (OCD). The project is intended to advance four candidates from Technology Readiness Level 4 to Technology Readiness Level 6 through preclinical development, validation and clinical-trial preparation.

The four candidates named in the release are PEPR111, associated with neuromuscular disorders and oncology; PEPRX101, associated with alopecia; PEPR202, associated with neuropathy; and PEPR112, associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The announced work includes preclinical and investigational new drug (IND)-enabling studies, formulation development and preparation for clinical trials, subject to scientific and regulatory requirements.

The correct status language is important. TDB-DST support and an agreement can enable research progression, but they do not by themselves establish clinical efficacy, regulatory approval or availability of a medicine for patients. The milestone has examination value because it links public innovation finance, AI-enabled drug discovery, technology-readiness levels and the pathway from laboratory development towards translational research.

Economy and AgricultureFirst-year progress of the pulses self-reliance missionRs 11,440 crore allocation; 2025-26 production in the 3rd Advance Estimates was 274.09 lakh tonnes

Exam Focus

For the pulses mission, remember the 2025-26 to 2030-31 period, Rs 11,440 crore allocation, nearly 350 lakh-tonne production target, 274.09 lakh tonnes in the 3rd Advance Estimates, and the procurement role of NCCF and NAFED. Keep current estimates separate from long-term targets and final outcomes.

For VIGOR, remember the roles of TDB and DST, Peptris Technologies, the Rs 86 crore support under the RDI Fund, the Rs 172 crore total project cost and the TRL-4 to TRL-6 progression. The agreement supports preclinical and IND-enabling work; it does not mean that any candidate has received marketing approval or completed clinical validation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current status of the pulses mission?

The 11 October 2026 PIB backgrounder reports first-year progress for a six-year mission launched in 2025. It gives current production, trade, processing and procurement indicators, but the long-term targets remain targets.

What does the 274.09 lakh-tonne figure represent?

It is total pulse production in the 3rd Advance Estimates for 2025-26. It is not the mission's nearly 350 lakh-tonne target for 2030-31 and should not be treated as a final audited figure.

Does the VIGOR agreement mean that a drug has been approved?

No. The release describes TDB-DST support for preclinical, validation and IND-enabling work and preparation for clinical trials. Regulatory approval and clinical completion are separate later stages.
