Economy - Real GDP Grows 7.8% in the First Quarter of 2026-27

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released quarterly estimates for the first quarter, April-June, of 2026-27. Real GDP, measured at constant prices with base year 2022-23, grew by 7.8% over the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Nominal GDP, measured at current prices, grew by 10.3%.

The distinction is important. Real GDP removes the effect of price changes by using constant prices, while nominal GDP is measured at current market prices and can reflect both changes in output and prices. Quarterly estimates also include expenditure components, allowing analysis of consumption, investment, government expenditure and net exports. For prelims, do not treat real and nominal growth rates as interchangeable.

Economy - Trial Index of Services Production Released for June 2026

MoSPI released the Sub-Sectoral Trial Index of Services Production (ISP) for June 2026 with base year 2024-25. The release covers 19 service sub-sectors. Eighteen of these recorded positive year-on-year growth in June, and eight recorded double-digit growth.

Real estate reported the highest growth at 24.7%, followed by retail trade at 18.0%, wholesale trade at 15.1%, administrative and support services at 14.4%, and IT and computer-related services at 13.5%. Banking grew by 11.4%. The ISP is a trial index intended to measure activity in service sub-sectors. It should not be confused with the Index of Industrial Production, which measures industrial-sector output.

Public Finance - Union Government Accounts Up to July 2026

The Controller General of Accounts released the monthly review of Union Government accounts up to July 2026. Total receipts stood at Rs 13,06,709 crore, or 35.8% of the corresponding Budget Estimates for 2026-27. This included Rs 8,44,560 crore of tax revenue net to the Centre, Rs 4,23,013 crore of non-tax revenue and Rs 39,136 crore of non-debt capital receipts.

Total expenditure was Rs 17,61,853 crore, or 32.9% of the corresponding Budget Estimates. Revenue expenditure was Rs 13,11,218 crore and capital expenditure was Rs 4,50,635 crore. States received Rs 3,72,354 crore as devolution of tax share. Revenue expenditure is expenditure that does not create assets directly, while capital expenditure generally contributes to asset creation or reduction of liabilities.

Defence - INS Nipun Commissioned as a Nistar-Class Diving Support Vessel

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel of the Nistar class, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai on 31 August. The vessel strengthens the Navy's deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and submarine-rescue capabilities.

INS Nipun was indigenously designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam. A Diving Support Vessel is a specialist platform for underwater operations; it is different from a destroyer, frigate or aircraft carrier meant primarily for surface combat roles. The commissioning adds to India's domestic defence-shipbuilding capability as well as its capacity for diving support and rescue tasks.

Internal Security - DRI Gold-Smuggling Crackdown Includes a Guwahati Seizure

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence reported seizure of more than 42 kg of foreign-origin gold and around 10 kg of silver valued at over Rs 65 crore in intelligence-led operations. Twenty-five persons, including five foreign nationals, were arrested. The cases involved airports, land routes, coastal routes, fabricated vehicle cavities, concealment on persons and transit passengers.

For Assam and Northeast aspirants, the release recorded a 3.84 kg seizure of foreign-origin gold bars in Guwahati. The gold was allegedly smuggled through the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Tripura sector, and two persons were arrested. DRI is the apex anti-smuggling intelligence and enforcement agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. Its work under the Customs Act should be distinguished from narcotics enforcement under the NDPS Act.

Fisheries - Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 Released for Ornamental Fisheries

At a fisheries outreach programme in Agatti, Lakshadweep, the Strategic Action Plan for Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 was released for ornamental fisheries development. The programme also highlighted the sustainable use of high-value island resources such as tuna, seaweed and ornamental fisheries.

The Department of Fisheries noted the role of Fisheries Farmer Producer Organizations and fisheries cooperatives in strengthening the sector. Ornamental fisheries concern fish and other aquatic organisms kept or traded for aquaria and decorative purposes; they are distinct from food-fish capture fisheries. The development links the Blue Economy with value addition, sustainable resource use, market organisation and livelihoods in island regions.

Governance - CPGRAMS Central Ministries Report for July 2026

The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances released the 51st monthly CPGRAMS report for Central Ministries and Departments. In July 2026, Central Ministries and Departments redressed 2,16,827 grievances. The average grievance disposal time in 2026 was reported as 12 days.

CPGRAMS stands for the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System. In the Grievance Redressal Assessment and Index, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region was among the leading Group B performers, alongside the Department of Official Language and the Ministry of Textiles. CPGRAMS is a public-grievance redress platform, not a court of appeal or a statutory regulator. Its performance reports help assess administrative responsiveness and pendency.

International Relations - India and Russia Review Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek on the margins of the 26th SCO Summit. The leaders reviewed cooperation in political, economic, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people fields. They also welcomed the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural Matters held in Moscow on 24 August.

The discussion included developments in West Asia and the Black Sea region that affect maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers. India reiterated the position that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, and that freedom of navigation and commercial shipping must be safeguarded. India-Russia relations are described officially as a Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership; this is a bilateral relationship descriptor, not a collective-defence alliance.

Infrastructure - Railways Approves Adra-Joychandipahar Freight Bypass

Indian Railways approved an 11 km bypass line between the Adra end and Joychandipahar in South Eastern Railway at a cost of Rs 272 crore. The project will create a bi-directional connection to an upcoming third line and reduce surface-crossing conflicts that slow freight movement.

The bypass is part of the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor. It is expected to facilitate additional traffic of 8.88 million tonnes per annum when completed. It will support freight linked to SAIL's iron-ore demand and BCCL's projected movement, while easing congestion on the Adra-Joychandipahar-Sanka section. A rail bypass is an operational-capacity project: its purpose is to separate paths and improve network flow, rather than build a new passenger terminal.

Environment and Urban Governance - Depalpur Becomes First Zero Legacy Waste City Under Swachh Shehar Jodi

Depalpur Nagar Parishad in Madhya Pradesh became the first city under the Swachh Shehar Jodi initiative to achieve Zero Legacy Waste. Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, the town remediated 1,250 metric tonnes of waste accumulated over five years at its dumpsite.

Swachh Shehar Jodi is a time-bound mentor-mentee framework for urban waste management. It has 72 mentor cities and 200 mentee cities working through peer learning, field visits and knowledge transfer. Depalpur used four-bin segregation, recovered recyclable material, and sent refuse-derived fuel for co-processing in cement factories. Legacy waste means old waste accumulated at dumpsites, while refuse-derived fuel is a combustible fuel prepared from suitable non-recyclable fractions of municipal solid waste.
