Overview
The 1 November 2026 Daily Current Affairs edition covers two developments that cleared the chronology and exam-value gates: the first orbit manoeuvre of the NVS-03 navigation satellite and the Ministry of Coal's August 2026 import data. The NVS-03 manoeuvre is a new milestone beyond the launch covered in the previous edition. The coal release is a current official data update with useful distinctions between imported-coal-based plants, domestic-coal-based blending and supply-chain policy. Routine port-call, scheduled-visit and pre-event award notices were excluded. Attempt the Daily Current Affairs Quiz - 1 November 2026 after revision.
Science and Technology - NVS-03 First Orbit Manoeuvre
ISRO reported that the first orbit manoeuvre of NVS-03 was successfully completed on 31 October 2026 at 16:48 hours. The milestone was reported by PIB on 1 November and independently recorded by ISRO. The satellite had been launched by GSLV-F18 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre on 30 October at 23:51 hours and inserted into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The first manoeuvre raised it to an estimated orbit of 5,477.6 km by 37,833.4 km; further manoeuvres were planned to place it in the geosynchronous orbital slot at 111.75 degrees East.
The manoeuvre used NVS-03's Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM). A GTO is an elliptical transfer orbit used before later orbit-raising and circularisation steps for a geosynchronous destination. The release therefore describes an in-mission orbital milestone, not final placement in the designated geosynchronous slot. NVS-03 is the third satellite in the next-generation navigation series and carries an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured clocks. It also carries L1, L5 and S navigation signals and is intended to strengthen Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) and India's independent Positioning, Navigation and Timing capabilities.
This is distinct from the 31 October edition's launch coverage: the first orbit manoeuvre occurred at 16:48 on 31 October, after that edition's recorded research cutoff, and became available through the 1 November primary-source update. It should not be described as final orbital-slot insertion because further manoeuvres remained planned.

Economy and Energy - Coal Imports in August 2026
The Ministry of Coal reported on 1 November 2026 that India's total coal imports in August 2026 fell 5.83% to 104.57 million tonnes (MT) from 111.05 MT in August 2025, a reduction of 6.48 MT. The release connects the decline with efforts to strengthen domestic production, availability and supply chains and reduce import dependence.
The sectoral figures show why the headline should be read carefully. Coal imports by power plants decreased 6.39%, from 22.77 MT to 21.32 MT. Imports for blending at domestic coal-based (DCB) power plants fell 35.23%, from 4.64 MT to 3.00 MT. In contrast, imports by imported coal-based (ICB) power plants increased 0.98%, from 18.13 MT to 18.31 MT; these plants are designed to operate primarily on imported coal.
The share of imported coal in total coal consumption declined from 21.20% in August 2025 to 19.30% in August 2026. Coking coal imports fell 4.18%, from 28.49 MT to 27.30 MT. The Ministry also referred to First Mile Connectivity, coal evacuation infrastructure and coordination with the Ministry of Railways, Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries as part of the effort to strengthen domestic supply. These are reported data and policy priorities, not a claim that import dependence has been eliminated.

Quick Revision Table
| Topic | Material milestone | Exact status | Key exam fact |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVS-03 | First orbit manoeuvre completed on 31 October at 16:48 | Further manoeuvres remained planned | LAM was used for orbit raising |
| Coal imports | August 2026 data released on 1 November | Total imports down 5.83% year-on-year | DCB blending imports fell 35.23%; ICB-plant imports rose 0.98% |
Exam Focus
For Science and Technology, keep the mission sequence clear: GSLV-F18 launch, insertion into GTO, first orbit manoeuvre, and later manoeuvres toward the geosynchronous slot. Revise the relationship between the launcher, NVS-03, LAM and NavIC, and do not confuse a completed orbit manoeuvre with final orbital placement. For Economy and Energy, distinguish total imports from power-sector imports, DCB blending imports from ICB-plant imports, and coking coal from other coal categories. The figures are useful because they show different movements within the same monthly data release.

The strongest objection to the NVS-03 item is that the launch itself was already covered on 31 October. The objection is resolved because the first orbit manoeuvre was a separate completed operational milestone at 16:48 on 31 October and was not available at the previous edition's cutoff. The strongest objection to the coal item is that it is periodic data rather than a new policy. It remains useful because the official release provides a current national energy-import indicator and substantive distinctions between DCB blending, ICB plants, power-sector imports and coking coal.
The naval port call was rejected as routine diplomatic activity without a new exercise, agreement or strategic capability. The mining awards notice was rejected because the ceremony had not yet occurred. The Sikkim item was rejected because it announced a future visit and planned projects, not completed implementation. No post-cutoff information was used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has NVS-03 reached its final geosynchronous slot?
Not according to the cited 1 November update. The first orbit manoeuvre was completed, but further manoeuvres were still planned to place the satellite in its designated slot at 111.75 degrees East.
What is the role of the Liquid Apogee Motor in this mission?
The Liquid Apogee Motor performs the chemical propulsion burn used for orbit-raising manoeuvres after a spacecraft has been inserted into a transfer orbit.
Did all coal-import categories decline in August 2026?
No. Total imports declined, as did power-sector and DCB blending imports, but imports by imported coal-based power plants increased marginally by 0.98%.
What happened to the share of imported coal in total consumption?
It declined from 21.20% in August 2025 to 19.30% in August 2026, according to the Ministry of Coal release.
