Polity and Northeast - Two Additional Judges Appointed to Gauhati High Court

The President appointed Nchumbemo Mozhui and Helen Dawngliani as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court. Mozhui was appointed from the Bar, while Dawngliani was serving as a Judicial Officer. The development is relevant for Assam and Northeast examinations because the Gauhati High Court has jurisdiction over Assam and several other northeastern States.

Under Article 224 of the Constitution, the President may appoint duly qualified persons as Additional Judges of a High Court for a temporary period not exceeding two years. An Additional Judge should not be confused with a permanent Judge; the distinction relates to the nature and duration of appointment. In objective questions, connect this update with Article 224 and with the constitutional process of High Court appointments, rather than treating it as a change in the court's territorial jurisdiction.

Food Security - DFPD and FCI Sign MoU for FY 2026-27

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for FY 2026-27 in New Delhi. The MoU sets a performance framework aimed at improving operational efficiency, accountability and foodgrain management.

Its focus areas include reducing storage losses, augmenting storage capacity, strengthening logistics and supply chains, improving quality control, and using digital processes and IT systems. The release also linked a proportion of the targets with FCI depots through the Depot Darpan Portal. FCI is the central public-sector institution associated with procurement, storage and distribution of foodgrains under the food-management system. For examinations, distinguish a performance MoU from a new food-security law or a change in the Public Distribution System entitlement.

Agriculture - All India Kharif Area Coverage

The Ministry of Agriculture reported all-India Kharif crop coverage of 1,086.31 lakh hectares as on 4 September 2026. The release provides a seasonal snapshot of area sown, not a final estimate of agricultural production or yield.

Rice accounted for 421.82 lakh hectares, compared with 438.19 lakh hectares at the comparable point in the previous year. Total pulses covered 117.13 lakh hectares, an increase of 1.84 lakh hectares over the previous year's 115.30 lakh hectares. Within pulses, tur covered 45.66 lakh hectares and urad 25.15 lakh hectares. Area coverage can change with rainfall, sowing conditions and crop choices. Candidates should therefore avoid converting the reported area into a production claim; acreage, yield and output are different agricultural indicators.

Cyber Security and Banking - Financial Fraud Risk Indicator

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reported that its Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) had helped prevent suspected cyber-fraud transactions worth more than Rs 5,000 crore within fifteen months of its launch on 22 May 2025. The cumulative amount reported as of August 2026 was Rs 5,043.73 crore.

FRI uses telecom intelligence to flag suspected financial-fraud risks before a transaction is completed. It relies on cooperation across telecom, banking, fintech, securities, insurance and law-enforcement ecosystems. The release noted collaboration with institutions such as RBI, NPCI and SEBI, and stated that more than 1,600 organisations were on the Digital Intelligence Platform. The key examination point is preventive action at the transaction stage: this is not a post-fraud recovery scheme, a banking regulator, or a replacement for a citizen's own digital-security precautions.

Environment - India-Japan Joint Working Group on Forests

The seventh India-Japan Joint Working Group on cooperation in forests was held in Bengaluru on 8 September 2026. The Indian delegation was led by Ramesh Kumar Pandey, Additional Director General of Forests, MoEFCC, while the Japanese delegation was led by Shimizu Kotaro of Japan's Forestry Agency.

The meeting discussed three cooperation areas. Under Trees Outside Forests (TOF), the sides exchanged views on assessment, management and genetic improvement of tree resources outside recorded forest areas. They also discussed forest genetics, including genetic-resource conservation, tree breeding, improved planting material and germplasm conservation. A useful conceptual distinction is that TOF concerns trees outside conventional forest areas; it does not mean that such trees are automatically part of notified forests. The update joins environmental governance with bilateral technical cooperation.

Defence and International Relations - India-Morocco Joint Defence Committee

India and Morocco held the inaugural meeting of their Joint Defence Committee (JDC) in New Delhi on 8 September 2026. The meeting was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary for International Cooperation in India's Ministry of Defence, and Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani of the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco.

The two sides discussed cooperation in training and education, peacekeeping, military exercises, medical cooperation, cyber defence and defence industries. A Joint Defence Committee is a bilateral consultation mechanism; it does not by itself amount to a military alliance or a defence treaty. The current-affairs value lies in the first formal JDC meeting and its broad cooperation agenda. Morocco is a North African country, and the release noted that India and Morocco will mark 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.

International Health - Dili Declaration at WHO South-East Asia Meeting

At the 79th session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in Timor-Leste, Member States adopted the Dili Declaration on Equity in Specialized Care. The declaration focuses on improving equitable access to specialised healthcare across the region.

The WHO South-East Asia Region should not be confused with a geographical list of all Asian countries or with ASEAN. It is a WHO regional grouping. India's participation at the session also received two WHO South-East Asia regional awards, for maternal-health and non-communicable-disease management. In exam questions, the strongest factual hook is the Dili Declaration and the host country, Timor-Leste. The declaration is a regional health commitment, not a domestic Indian scheme or a new global treaty.

Infrastructure and Economy - Western Dedicated Freight Corridor Completed

The Prime Minister dedicated three key sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) to the nation during a development-project programme in Vadodara, Gujarat. The dedication marked completion of the WDFC project, which has been developed to strengthen freight movement on a high-capacity rail network.

Dedicated Freight Corridors are specialised rail corridors intended mainly for freight traffic. By separating a substantial part of freight movement from passenger routes, they can improve capacity, speed, reliability and logistics efficiency. The WDFC must be distinguished from the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor: both are freight-corridor projects, but they are separate corridors. The current-affairs hook is the completion of the Western corridor after the dedication of its final key sections. It is an infrastructure-completion development, not a new rail-fare or passenger-service announcement.

Education - ULLAS and International Literacy Day

The Ministry of Education held the national-level celebration of International Literacy Day 2026 in New Delhi. The event highlighted the ULLAS programme, formally known as Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society - Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.

ULLAS is associated with adult education and the goal of making India fully literate. The Ministry was also observing Literacy Fortnight from 1 to 14 September 2026 through activities such as workshops, seminars, gram-panchayat programmes, registration drives and outreach campaigns. The current-affairs point is the connection between International Literacy Day and ULLAS, not a new school-board examination or a scholarship programme. In a conceptual question, adult literacy, lifelong learning and active citizenship are the appropriate themes to associate with ULLAS.

Northeast History - INA Museum at Moirang

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan visited the INA Museum at Moirang in Manipur and paid tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The museum commemorates the Indian National Army and the historic site associated with the first hoisting of the Indian Tricolour on the Indian mainland by the INA.

Moirang is in Manipur, not Assam. The event offers a useful bridge between Northeast current affairs and the freedom struggle. The Indian National Army is closely associated with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, while the Azad Hind Government was the provisional government linked with the INA movement. Candidates should retain the location-fact pair: Moirang - Manipur - INA Museum. The visit also included Sainik School Imphal, but the principal examination hook is the historical significance of Moirang.
