Education - President Confers National Awards on Teachers
The President of India conferred the National Awards on Teachers on Teachers' Day, 5 September 2026, in New Delhi. The occasion is linked to the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India's second President, whose birthday is observed as Teachers' Day in India.
The President described education as a means of realising equality of opportunity under the Constitution and highlighted the importance of academic excellence, skill development and entrepreneurship. For examinations, distinguish Teachers' Day in India from World Teachers' Day, which is observed on 5 October under the auspices of UNESCO. A national award ceremony is an honour-related current-affairs development, while the broader policy questions concern education, skills and opportunity.

Industry - SAIL Records Best-Ever August Production
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) reported its best-ever August production of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel in 2026. Crude-steel production rose by 8% year on year to 1.68 million tonnes, while hot-metal production rose by 9% to 1.78 million tonnes. Saleable steel increased by 1% to 1.69 million tonnes.
SAIL's August sales were 1.871 million tonnes, a 13% year-on-year increase. Hot metal is the product of blast-furnace ironmaking, crude steel is produced after steelmaking, and saleable steel is processed for sale or further use. These stages should not be treated as interchangeable. SAIL is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Steel.

Health Technology - India Valve Registry Launched
The Vice President launched the India Valve Registry at India Valves 2026 in Chennai. It is a collaborative multicentre initiative for systematic, secure and de-identified collection of real-world data on transcatheter valve interventions across India.
The registry is intended to strengthen India-specific clinical evidence and improve decision-making in treatment of valvular and structural heart diseases. A medical registry systematically records standardised data on patients, procedures or outcomes to support research and quality improvement. De-identified data removes or protects information that can directly identify individuals. A registry is not itself a treatment programme, health-insurance scheme or a disease-surveillance law.

Science and Innovation - IIT Kharagpur Healthcare Hub Enters Sustainable Phase
The Common Research and Technology Development Hub (CRTDH) on Affordable Healthcare at IIT Kharagpur entered its sustainable phase. The hub was established in 2019 under the CRTDH scheme of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology.
The hub has facilitated more than 20 technology transfers, several of which have been commercialised, and works with clinical and non-governmental partners to support affordable healthcare technologies in rural settings. Technology transfer is the movement of a research output, know-how or innovation from a laboratory or institution to an entity that can develop, manufacture or deploy it. The development illustrates the role of public research institutions in lab-to-market translation and frugal innovation.

Securities Regulation - SEBI and ESMA Sign MoU on Central Counterparties
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) for cooperation and exchange of information relating to Central Counterparties (CCPs). The agreement was announced on 4 September 2026.
A CCP stands between the buyer and seller in a financial-market transaction, becoming the buyer to every seller and the seller to every buyer. This arrangement reduces counterparty risk and supports clearing and settlement. SEBI is India's securities-market regulator, while ESMA is the European Union authority responsible for securities markets. The MoU is a regulatory-cooperation arrangement; it does not create a common India-EU stock exchange.

Justice Delivery - Mobile eSewa Vans Extend eCourts Access
The eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and Department of Justice flagged off Mobile eSewa Vans on 4 September 2026. The initiative is part of the eCourts Project and aims to take eCourts services, legal aid and legal-literacy support closer to citizens.
The first tranche comprises 26 vans, from a planned fleet of 73. The initiative is designed to support services such as digital e-filing, secure e-payments, mobile Lok Adalats, remote hearings and witness depositions in remote or underserved areas. NALSA provides free legal services to eligible persons and organises Lok Adalats under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. The vans support access to justice; they do not replace courts or alter judicial jurisdiction.

Financial Reporting - NFRA Constitutes Audit Quality Advisory Committee
The National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) constituted an Advisory Committee on Audit Quality, Assurance and Technology. The committee is formed under Rules 15 and 16 of the National Financial Reporting Authority Rules, 2018, which enable NFRA to constitute committees, study groups and task forces to support its functions.
The committee includes representation from professionals, chief financial officers, audit committees, independent directors, technology experts, regulators and industry. Its role is to provide inputs on matters with a significant bearing on audit quality and on awareness of auditing and accounting standards. NFRA is the statutory authority associated with oversight of accounting and auditing standards and audit quality; it is distinct from SEBI, which regulates the securities market.

Consumer Protection - CCPA Penalises Online Listing of Explosive Substance
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Dial4Trade Technologies for facilitating online listing, hosting, advertising and sale of ammonium nitrate without mandatory safeguards. The authority also directed the platform to discontinue the listing or facilitation of sale of ammonium nitrate and other substances classified as explosives under the Explosives Act, 1884.
The order cited the absence of PESO licence disclosure, buyer-eligibility verification, transaction traceability and statutory safety cautions. The CCPA held that presenting a regulated explosive substance like an ordinary consumer product could amount to a misleading advertisement and unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. PESO is the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation. This action concerns platform due diligence for regulated goods, not a general ban on e-commerce.

Textiles and Trade - Bharat Tex Federation Signs MoU With Premiere Vision
The Bharat Tex Trade Federation (BTTF) and Premiere Vision SA signed a multi-year Memorandum of Understanding on 2 September 2026 at the Premiere Vision exhibition in Paris. The partnership is intended to strengthen India's engagement with the global fashion and textile ecosystem through trade, sourcing, design, sustainability and heritage.
Premiere Vision is an international platform for fashion, textiles and sourcing. The MoU builds on a Letter of Intent signed at Bharat Tex 2026 in New Delhi and seeks to connect Indian manufacturers, exporters, designers, artisans and MSMEs with international buyers and premium sourcing networks. The arrangement is an institutional partnership to improve market linkage and design-led export opportunities; it is not a trade agreement negotiated by the Government of India.

International Trade - India-Afghanistan Joint Working Group Reviews Commerce
The India-Afghanistan Joint Working Group on Trade, Commerce and Investment met virtually on 1 September 2026. It reviewed measures to facilitate bilateral trade and identified follow-up actions on customs and data sharing, pharmaceutical and agricultural regulation, trade connectivity, investment and business-to-business engagement.
The discussion included customs cooperation, visa facilitation for Afghan traders, banking and financial cooperation, tariff concessions, cargo connectivity and port-related issues. A Joint Working Group is an institutional mechanism for sector-specific discussions and follow-up between governments. It is not equivalent to a free-trade agreement: a trade agreement creates formal commitments, while a JWG commonly reviews cooperation and supports further negotiations or implementation.
