International Relations - 26th SCO Summit Held in Bishkek
The 26th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, from 31 August to 1 September 2026. The summit marked the 25th anniversary of the organisation. The leaders adopted the Bishkek Declaration, four Memoranda of Understanding and more than 20 decisions and statements covering areas such as climate, nuclear safety, energy conservation and combating drug addiction.
India supported initiatives that were reflected in the declaration, including English as an official language in the SCO Charter, a Civilisation Dialogue Forum, a Young Scientist Forum and a Young Author's Conclave. India has been a full SCO member since 2017. For examinations, distinguish the SCO as a Eurasian regional organisation from BRICS, which is a separate grouping with a different membership and institutional framework.

Food Economy - Sugar Stock Limit Reduced for Dealers
The Government reduced the sugar stock-holding limit for dealers from 4,000 quintals to 2,000 quintals from 15 September 2026 to 30 November 2026. The limit of 4,000 quintals remains for Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas because that market supplies the eastern region, including the Northeast.
The measure is intended to curb hoarding and speculative trading, improve orderly movement through the supply chain and support price stability. Dealers are also barred from holding stock for more than 30 days from the date of receipt. A stock limit is an administrative supply-management tool; it differs from a minimum support price, which is a procurement-price policy for farmers.

Competition Regulation - CCI Orders Cease and Desist in Debenture Trusteeship Case
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) directed the Trustees' Association of India, IDBI Trusteeship Services, Axis Trustee Services and SBI CAP Trustee Company to cease and desist from anti-competitive conduct. The order, issued under Section 27 of the Competition Act, 2002, found violations of Section 3(3)(a) and Section 3(3)(b), read with Section 3(1).
The Commission found that the parties had fixed a benchmark price for debenture trusteeship services during FY 2020-21 and FY 2021-22. Section 3 of the Competition Act deals with anti-competitive agreements, while Section 27 empowers the CCI to pass remedial orders after inquiry. In a competition-law question, price-fixing among competitors is distinct from a consumer grievance or a securities-market disclosure issue.

Labour and Social Security - EPFO Reiterates VISHWAS, 2026
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation reiterated the availability of VISHWAS, 2026, a one-time settlement scheme for eligible long-pending disputes concerning damages for provident-fund defaults. The scheme remains open until 28 December 2026. It covers damages linked to Section 14B of the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, and Section 128 of the Code on Social Security, 2020.
Under the scheme, the reduced damages are 0.25% per month for a delay of up to two months, 0.50% per month for a delay from two to four months, and 1% per month for a delay beyond four months. VISHWAS is a dispute-resolution and compliance measure for establishments; it is not a scheme that changes the PF contribution rate or the pension entitlement of individual subscribers.

Rural Finance - SHG-Bank Linkages Get a New Credit Roadmap
The Ministry of Rural Development reviewed Self-Help Group (SHG)-bank linkages and enterprise financing under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM). The review set a five-year target of Rs 10 lakh crore in loans to SHGs and Rs 1 lakh crore in loans to individual women entrepreneurs. It also called for a helpline and regular monitoring to address delays, documentation problems and low credit limits.
The release reported that more than 10 crore rural women have been organised into about 92-93 lakh SHGs under DAY-NRLM, and cumulative bank credit to SHGs has crossed Rs 13.67 lakh crore. SHG-bank linkage is a financial-inclusion approach in which a group can access formal credit collectively; it should not be confused with a direct cash-transfer programme.

Defence Cooperation - India and Belgium Discuss Co-development
India and Belgium held a Defence CEOs Roundtable and business-to-business meetings in New Delhi to deepen defence-industrial cooperation. The discussions identified potential collaboration in cyber security, AI-enabled unmanned aerial systems, underwater-domain vehicles and complex weapon systems. The stated approach was co-development and co-production, drawing on Belgian technology and India's manufacturing scale.
The discussion also highlighted Indian innovation platforms such as iDEX and ADITI, which engage startups and MSMEs in defence technology. Co-development means partners jointly develop a product or technology, whereas co-production concerns joint manufacture. These terms are often tested in questions on defence indigenisation and strategic partnerships.

Environment - CAQM Finds Non-compliance in Nuh Industrial Inspection
The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) conducted a special industrial inspection drive in Nuh, Haryana, on 3 September. Of 35 industrial units inspected, 17 were found non-compliant, 11 were compliant and seven were closed or non-operational at the time of inspection.
The drive examined compliance with environmental norms and Consent to Operate conditions. The reported issues included defective wet scrubbers, poorly maintained electrostatic precipitators, fugitive dust, non-compliant diesel-generator sets, unapproved fuels and inadequate emission monitoring. CAQM is a statutory body concerned with air-quality management in the National Capital Region and adjoining areas. Consent to Operate is an environmental regulatory permission and not an industrial licence issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Science and Education - India Wins Nine Medals at IESO 2026
India recorded its best-ever performance at the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) in Turin, Italy, winning nine medals: four gold, three silver and two bronze. The competition was held from 20 to 27 August 2026 under the aegis of the International Geoscience Organisation, with participants from 39 countries.
India's national selection process was supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences through its Outreach and Awareness programme. The all-India test was facilitated by the Geological Society of India, after which selected students underwent training. IESO covers areas such as geoscience, field investigation and Earth-science projects. It is not an ISRO mission or a conventional sports event.

Railway Safety - Kavach 4.0 Approved for Moradabad Division
Indian Railways approved Rs 170 crore for Kavach Version 4.0 on the remaining 712 route kilometres of the Moradabad Division of Northern Railway. The work will expand deployment of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system on the identified sections.
Kavach is designed to improve operational safety by helping prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), applying brakes when necessary in unsafe situations and controlling train speed in critical conditions. It is a train-protection and signalling-safety system, not a passenger-information platform or a railway-ticketing service. Candidates should remember the distinction between route kilometres, which measure a railway route once, and track kilometres, which can count multiple tracks separately.

Land Restoration - India Reports Progress at UNCCD COP17
India reported at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) that 21.76 million hectares of land were brought under restoration during 2011-2020. The work generated approximately 1.22 billion person-days of employment. India has committed to restore 26 million hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2030 under the Bonn Challenge.
Land restoration includes measures that improve degraded ecosystems and their productive capacity. It is linked to soil health, biodiversity, climate resilience and rural livelihoods. The UNCCD addresses desertification, land degradation and drought; it is distinct from the UNFCCC, which is the climate-change convention, and the Convention on Biological Diversity, which focuses on biodiversity.
