Economy and Industry - IIP August 2026 Quick Estimate

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the Quick Estimate of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for August 2026 on 28 September. IIP growth was 8.0% year-on-year, compared with 6.7% in July 2026. The series uses 2022-23 as its base year.

The sector-wise growth rates were 9.0% for Manufacturing, 12.3% for Electricity and Gas Supply, 6.3% for Water Supply, Sewerage and Waste Management, and -5.6% for Mining and Quarrying. The IIP quick estimate stood at 123.3 against 114.2 in August 2025. The release also noted that the August figures are quick estimates and can be revised later as more source data becomes available.

The exam value lies in reading the index correctly: IIP is a high-frequency measure of industrial activity, the base year is 2022-23, and the headline growth can conceal divergent sector performance. Manufacturing and electricity grew, while mining contracted during the same reference month.

Science and Technology - India-France Space Cooperation

India and France discussed a new phase of space cooperation during a meeting between Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh and French Minister for Higher Education, Research and Space Philippe Baptiste in New Delhi on 28 September. The discussion covered the India-France Year of Innovation 2026, the planned Space Summit and wider scientific and technological cooperation.

The partnership spans joint satellite missions, launch-vehicle technologies, human spaceflight and emerging space applications. The release referred to the joint satellites Megha-Tropiques and SARAL, progress on TRISHNA, and French support to India’s Gaganyaan programme, including consumables and training of flight surgeons. Indian and French teams have also begun discussions on microgravity research and parabolic flights.

The development is significant because it connects an established inter-governmental partnership with human spaceflight, climate and Earth-observation applications, research institutions, industry and start-ups. The release also stated that more than 400 Indian space start-ups are active across rocket building, satellite building and space applications.

Environment and International Institutions - India at IWC-70

India presented its opening position at the 70th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC-70) in Hobart, Australia. The meeting is being held from 28 September to 2 October 2026 and marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW).

India called for cooperation among range countries, scientific institutions and international organisations, along with better data on cetacean population status, distribution, movement, breeding ecology and threats. It supported evidence-based management and locally appropriate approaches involving communities.

For static context, the ICRW was signed in 1946 and India joined the IWC in 1981. India’s domestic conservation work includes Project Dolphin, which covers dolphins, whales and porpoises and their habitats. The IWC topic should be remembered as an international conservation and marine-governance issue, not as a routine conference update.

Governance and Labour Safety - Steel Industry Safety Mechanism

The Ministry of Steel announced an institutional mechanism to strengthen safety standards and safety culture in the steel sector. The arrangement includes the Steel Industry Safety Council (SISC) and the Steel Industry Safety Directorate (SISD).

The SISC is an apex-level body under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel and is chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Steel. It is intended to assess the safety situation, support studies, review accidents and near-miss incidents, and approve industry safety standards and recommended practices. Its membership includes relevant government bodies, integrated steel producers and technical institutions.

The SISD provides technical and professional support. Its responsibilities include implementing SISC decisions, conducting periodic safety audits, maintaining accident and near-miss data, investigating serious incidents, reviewing emergency preparedness and issuing standards, recommended practices and guidelines suited to Indian conditions. The announcement creates an executive institutional mechanism; it should not be described as a new statutory regulator without a separate legal basis.

Economy and Banking - CGTMSE Guarantee Cover on TReDS

Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) guarantee cover has gone live on the Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS). The Ministry of MSME and CGTMSE integrated the guarantee facility with three TReDS platforms: M1xchange, RXIL and DTX (KredX).

TReDS is an RBI-regulated electronic platform that allows Micro and Small Enterprises to receive early payment against unpaid invoices due from corporate buyers, government departments and public sector undertakings. The new integration is designed to reduce credit risk for financiers and improve working-capital access for eligible MSE buyers and sellers.

The guarantee arrangement provides 75% cover of the amount in default. The maximum exposure is ₹10 crore for an MSE buyer and ₹2 crore for an MSE seller, on a revolving basis. The digital workflow can support invoice eligibility checks, guarantee-fee calculation, fee debit and automatic generation of the cover note and invoice. This is a policy-and-platform development in MSME finance rather than a routine banking-service update.
