Overview

This Daily Current Affairs edition for 28 September 2026 retains three developments with clear examination value: India’s result at the WorldSkills Shanghai competition, a national rail and clean-transport milestone, and India’s first port-based e-methanol initiative. The topics connect international competitions, skills policy, railway technology, green transport, maritime decarbonisation and an Assam-linked industrial partnership.

Routine institutional announcements, scheduled-only proposals, ordinary corporate performance updates and themes already covered in the previous edition have been excluded. Revise the notes below and then attempt the Daily Current Affairs Quiz - 28 September 2026 for ten practice questions.

Skills and International Competitions - WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

The WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition concluded with India placed 10th in the overall standings. India won six silver medals and earned 20 Medals for Excellence. The Indian participation is important for competitive-exam preparation because it links vocational skills, international benchmarking and the country’s effort to strengthen skill development.

WorldSkills is a major international platform for vocational and technical skills. The Shanghai competition brought together competitors across 63 skills, with India represented by 70 competitors. The result should be read as a skills-development update rather than as a conventional sports result: participants are assessed in occupational skill areas such as technology, manufacturing, construction and service-related disciplines.

For revision, remember the event location, India’s rank, the medal count and the distinction between a medal and a Medal for Excellence. A Medal for Excellence recognises a high standard of performance even when the competitor does not finish in the medal positions. These distinctions are useful in questions on human-resource development, vocational education and international skills competitions.

Keep the event’s skills-development context separate from sports medal tables.

Railways and Green Transport - First LNG-Powered Train

The country’s first LNG-powered train was flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad. The event was part of development projects worth ₹1,472 crore. The associated railway works included an LNG refuelling facility, a maintenance shed for the high-capacity WAG-12 electric locomotive and the start of Kavach work on the Sabarmati-Kalol-Sabarmati section.

Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is natural gas cooled to a liquid state so that it occupies much less volume and can be stored or transported more efficiently. An LNG-powered train is therefore a natural-gas-based transport application. It should not be confused with a hydrogen train or with an electric locomotive. In an examination question, the fuel technology and the national-first character of the initiative are the key points.

The update also illustrates how railway infrastructure projects can combine energy transition with operational assets. The WAG-12 is a high-power freight locomotive platform, while Kavach is an indigenous automatic train-protection system intended to support safer train operations by reducing the risk of collisions and other unsafe movement situations. These are separate parts of the same update and should not be treated as interchangeable technologies.

Green Shipping and Assam Industry - E-Methanol Foundation Stone at Kandla

On 26 September 2026, the foundation stone was laid for India’s first port-based e-methanol production facility at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, Gujarat. This is the material new development for this edition: the project moved from the earlier agreement stage to a foundation-stone milestone. The joint initiative involves the port authority and Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited, giving it both a maritime-energy and an Assam-linked industrial dimension.

The planned facility has a total capacity of 150 tonnes per day and an announced investment of ₹2,300 crore. The official release describes phased construction: Phase I adds 50 tonnes per day with an investment of ₹1,200 crore, followed by Phase II adding 100 tonnes per day with an investment of ₹1,100 crore. The proposed fuel is intended for ships operating on the Asia-Europe International Trade Corridor.

The plant will use renewable power, water and biogenic carbon dioxide to produce e-methanol. The earlier January MoU had established the DPA-APL partnership; the September foundation-stone event is the current-affairs milestone to remember. The topic is relevant to questions on green hydrogen derivatives, alternative marine fuels, port-led industrialisation, maritime decarbonisation and Assam’s role in national value chains.

For revision, connect e-methanol with renewable inputs, captured or biogenic carbon dioxide, ports and green shipping. Do not confuse the foundation-stone event with commissioned production or verified fuel deliveries.
