Environment - MEE-TR 2026 and Tiger-Reserve Management

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change launched the inception workshop for the sixth cycle of Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Tiger Reserves (MEE-TR). The sixth cycle will cover all 58 tiger reserves in India. The Technical Manual for MEE-TR 2026 was also released.

Management Effectiveness Evaluation is an evidence-based assessment of how well a protected area is being managed to achieve conservation objectives. The framework adapted from the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas examines six elements: Context, Planning, Inputs, Processes, Outputs and Outcomes. India’s earlier cycles were completed in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

An important new feature of MEE-TR 2026 is Solid Waste Management as a separate evaluation criterion. It will consider waste from forest chowkis, tourism and wildlife rescue centres, alongside tiger and prey conservation, habitat management, wildlife crime, fire and disaster management, community engagement and landscape connectivity.

Space Technology - Agnibaan Reusable Launch Vehicle

The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology, signed an agreement with Agnikul Cosmos for ₹200 crore of support from the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The project focuses on the development of the reusable Agnibaan RLV.

The programme aims to take the technology from Technology Readiness Level 4 and above towards Level 8. It includes a reusable upper-stage architecture and descent-propulsion system, with controlled descent and recovery as important goals. The proposed technology package also includes restartable and deeply throttleable propulsion, which is relevant to descent and landing operations.

The support will be provided through Optionally Convertible Debentures. The examination takeaway is the difference between a conventional expendable launch vehicle and a reusable launch architecture designed for repeatability, recovery and more efficient access to space.

Astronomy - Black-Hole Jets and the Circumgalactic Medium

Researchers from institutions including the Raman Research Institute and Arizona State University reported a possible mechanism through which jets from supermassive black holes influence the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of their host galaxies. The CGM is the diffuse reservoir of gas surrounding a galaxy and can provide fuel for star formation.

The researchers found that when a black-hole jet encounters the CGM, it deposits energy and excites the gas along the jet’s path. This energised and ionised gas can prevent cool gas from clumping and forming stars. The signal was strongest along the direction of the jet rather than equally in all directions, suggesting a directional interaction.

The study is relevant to astronomy because it connects a very small central object with the evolution of a much larger galaxy. It does not mean that black holes simply consume all surrounding matter; their jets can also regulate the gas environment and suppress star formation.

Science Policy - CSIR@85 and Technological Sovereignty

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) marked its 85th Foundation Day. The Ministry of Science and Technology emphasised technological sovereignty, stronger industry partnerships and faster translation of laboratory discoveries into deployable technologies.

CSIR was founded in 1942 and now operates a network of 37 laboratories with more than 10,000 personnel. At the CSIR@85 programme, the CSIR Innovation and Research Ambassador mascot, a special postal stamp, an industry-connect video and a technology compendium were released.

The policy message was that industry should become a co-creator in technology development rather than only a later partner. The Minister also stressed reducing dependence on imported technologies in critical areas and moving beyond import substitution towards globally competitive indigenous solutions.

International Relations and Security - IN-STEP 2026

The Vice-President addressed the fourth edition of the International Strategic Engagement Programme (IN-STEP). The programme is jointly organised by the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the National Security Council Secretariat, in collaboration with the National Defence College.

The 2026 edition brought together 38 delegates, including 25 international delegates from 22 countries of the Global South. Discussions addressed technology, cyberspace, artificial intelligence, energy and maritime security, climate change, economic resilience and supply chains. The guiding phrase was: “Think globally, engage strategically, and act in cohesion.”

IN-STEP is significant because it builds strategic understanding and professional linkages among countries rather than being a conventional military exercise or treaty. It reflects India’s emphasis on dialogue, mutual learning, sovereign equality and cooperation with developing countries.

Sports - Asian Games Mixed 4x400m Relay

India won the silver medal in the Mixed 4x400m Relay at the Asian Games. The team comprised Manu TS, Poovamma MR, Vishal TK and Vithya Ramraj. The result was highlighted for the team’s speed, coordination and determination.

The mixed relay is a team event that tests coordination across a fixed relay format involving male and female athletes. For examination revision, retain the event, medal and members together, and do not confuse this result with India’s individual athletics medals or other relay categories at the Games.

Economy and Industry - Pharmaceutical PLI Ecosystem

The Department of Pharmaceuticals reported progress under three Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes covering critical bulk drugs, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The combined approach is intended to strengthen domestic manufacturing, reduce import dependence and encourage technology adoption.

The PLI Scheme for Bulk Drugs, approved in 2020, has an outlay of ₹6,940 crore and covers 41 identified critical products. Forty-eight projects have been approved, with 39 projects for manufacturing 28 APIs or key starting materials commissioned by June 2026. The PLI Scheme for Pharmaceuticals, approved in 2021, has an outlay of ₹15,000 crore and supports biopharmaceuticals, complex generics, patented and off-patent drugs, orphan drugs and other high-value products.

The three schemes cover the chain from critical pharmaceutical inputs to high-value medicines and advanced medical devices. Candidates should distinguish the PLI mechanism, which links incentives to production and sales, from a direct grant unrelated to output.

Energy and International Cooperation - India-France Power Dialogue

India and France reaffirmed cooperation in the power sector during discussions between India’s Ministry of Power and Électricité de France (EDF). The talks covered the proposed deployment of EPR technology, localisation of the nuclear supply chain and cooperation on pumped-hydro storage projects.

The Indian side also briefed EDF on the draft SHANTI rules and regulations for the nuclear power sector, which were placed in the public domain for stakeholder consultation. The proposed framework is intended to streamline licensing and enable participation by private and foreign partners in India’s nuclear programme.

The discussion links nuclear power, domestic manufacturing, regulation and energy storage. It should be remembered as cooperation and consultation, not as the commissioning of a new reactor or a final approval of the draft rules.

Governance - Special Campaign for Disposal of Pending Matters 6.0

The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare began the preparatory phase of Special Campaign for Disposal of Pending Matters (SCDPM) 6.0. The wider campaign focuses on pendency reduction, records management, internal monitoring and “Ease of Rules” measures intended to improve pensioners’ ease of living.

The department identified 21 cleanliness sites through Central Government Pensioners’ Associations and set disposal targets for 6,500 public grievances and 800 appeals. It also identified 847 physical files and 653 electronic files for review and proposed 23 office memorandums related to ease of living for pensioners.

The campaign’s main period is scheduled from 2 to 31 October 2026, but the important current-affairs development for this edition is the preparatory phase and the measurable targets announced by the department. This is an example of administrative reform through pendency reduction and records management.
