Economy - Wholesale Price Index for August 2026

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade released the provisional Wholesale Price Index (WPI) estimates for August 2026. The series uses 2022-23 as its base year. WPI measures price changes at the wholesale stage and is distinct from the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks changes faced by consumers at the retail level.

The examination value of the release lies in the indicator rather than a single monthly number. WPI is compiled by the Office of the Economic Adviser under DPIIT. It is useful for understanding changes in the prices of goods before they reach final consumers. Candidates should not equate WPI inflation with cost-of-living inflation: CPI is generally the more direct measure of retail inflation, while WPI focuses on wholesale prices.

Mineral Policy - Commercial Coal Mine Auctions

A PIB update on commercial coal mine auctions highlighted the use of a transparent online two-stage ascending forward auction process. In such a process, bidders compete by improving their quoted bids; the preferred bidder is selected under the terms prescribed for the auction. Commercial coal mining seeks to widen participation in coal production and support domestic availability.

Coal is a major primary-energy resource for India, but an auction of a mine block is not the same thing as immediate coal production. A successful bidder still has to meet statutory, environmental, operational and contractual requirements. For examinations, distinguish commercial coal mining from the historic regime in which coal mining was dominated by public-sector entities and captive blocks. The current-affairs hook is the policy instrument: competitive allocation through auction.

Science and Technology - Data Centres as Digital Infrastructure

The PIB published a backgrounder on data centres in India as infrastructure for the digital age. A data centre houses computing, storage and networking equipment that enables digital services, cloud platforms and large-scale processing of information. It should not be confused with a single government database or merely with an internet-service provider.

Data centres matter for digital public infrastructure, e-governance, financial services, research and private digital platforms. Their growth also raises policy questions about reliable power, land, connectivity, water use, cooling efficiency, cybersecurity and disaster resilience. A good objective answer identifies a data centre as the physical infrastructure that supports storage and processing, rather than treating it as an application or a data-protection law.

Environment - Great Indian Bustard Conservation

The Union Environment Minister reviewed progress on Great Indian Bustard (GIB) conservation, grassland restoration and Project Cheetah in Bhuj, and released Gujarat's action plan for GIB conservation. The GIB is a flagship grassland bird; therefore, conserving it requires attention to grassland ecosystems rather than only to forests.

The update is a useful reminder that conservation planning has to match an organism's habitat. Open landscapes, grasslands and associated ecological processes are central to the species' survival. Candidates should avoid the common error of assuming that every wildlife-conservation programme is primarily a forest-protection measure. The GIB connects biodiversity protection with landscape-level planning, habitat restoration and State-level action.

Environment - Mangrove Conservation and MISHTI

At a workshop on mangrove conservation in Bhuj, the Environment Ministry released mangrove publications and reviewed progress under MISHTI. MISHTI stands for Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes. It links restoration of mangrove ecosystems with shoreline protection, biodiversity and livelihood opportunities.

Mangroves are salt-tolerant ecosystems found in coastal intertidal areas. They can reduce the impact of storm surges and coastal erosion, store carbon and provide habitat for diverse species. They are not freshwater forests, and planting mangroves is not suitable for every coastal location. For exams, remember the expansion of MISHTI and the ecological logic of conserving mangroves as coastal ecosystems.

Agriculture and Climate Resilience - Delhi Declaration on Drylands

Dryland Congress 2026 concluded in New Delhi with the Delhi Declaration on Drylands. The discussion focused on making dryland agriculture more resilient through science, policy, markets and local participation. Drylands face linked challenges such as variable rainfall, soil degradation, water stress and livelihood vulnerability.

Dryland farming does not simply mean farming without irrigation. It refers broadly to agriculture in areas where rainfall is limited or highly variable, requiring practices such as soil-moisture conservation, resilient crop choices, watershed management and appropriate risk management. Candidates should connect this topic with climate adaptation and food security, not with a single subsidy programme. The declaration is an example of policy attention to an agro-ecological challenge.

International Relations - Eighteenth BRICS Summit

The 18th BRICS Summit was held in New Delhi under India's chairship. The summit deliberated on inclusive global governance, multilateralism, resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. BRICS began with Brazil, Russia, India and China; South Africa later joined the grouping, and its membership has expanded further.

For examinations, BRICS should be understood as a forum of emerging economies and developing countries, not a military alliance or a United Nations body. Its discussions commonly cover reform of global governance, development finance, trade, technology and the concerns of the Global South. The 2026 summit is important because India hosted the gathering in New Delhi. Candidates should separate summit-level multilateral deliberations from bilateral meetings held on its sidelines.

Polity and Official Language - Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is observed on 14 September. The date marks the Constituent Assembly's adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union in 1949. Article 343 of the Constitution states that the official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script, while also providing for the use of English for official purposes as authorised by law.

The key constitutional distinction is important: Hindi is an official language of the Union; the Constitution does not declare any language as India's national language. The Eighth Schedule lists recognised languages, while official-language arrangements are governed through constitutional provisions and legislation. The sixth All India Official Language Conference was scheduled with the Hindi Diwas observance in 2026.

Defence - INS Kulish at Ream Naval Base

INS Kulish arrived at Ream Naval Base, Cambodia, as part of the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet operational deployment. A port call is an element of naval diplomacy and operational engagement: it can support professional interaction, maritime cooperation and familiarisation, but it is not automatically a joint military exercise.

The update is relevant to India's engagement with Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific. Cambodia lies in mainland Southeast Asia, while Ream is a naval facility on Cambodia's coast. In objective questions, focus on the association of INS Kulish with the Indian Navy and the location of Ream Naval Base in Cambodia. Do not confuse a naval port call with a formal defence treaty.

Defence Cooperation - India and Vietnam

India's Defence Secretary met Vietnam's Deputy Minister of National Defence on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The engagement reflects the continuing defence relationship between India and Vietnam, which includes dialogue, capacity building and cooperation in areas of shared maritime interest.

Vietnam is an important Southeast Asian partner for India. The bilateral engagement should be read alongside India's broader Act East policy and Indo-Pacific outreach, but it should not be portrayed as membership of a military alliance. For examinations, the essential link is India-Vietnam defence cooperation and the distinction between bilateral defence engagement and the BRICS multilateral forum where the meeting took place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does WPI measure?

WPI measures changes in prices at the wholesale stage. It differs from CPI, which is designed to track retail-price changes faced by consumers.

What does MISHTI stand for?

MISHTI stands for Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes.

Why is grassland restoration important for the Great Indian Bustard?

The Great Indian Bustard depends on open grassland landscapes, so habitat protection must extend beyond conventional forest-focused conservation.

Is Hindi India's national language?

No. The Constitution does not declare any language as a national language. Hindi in Devanagari script is the official language of the Union under Article 343.

Is a naval port call the same as a joint exercise?

No. A port call can support maritime engagement and cooperation, but it does not by itself mean a formal joint military exercise.
