Economy & Labour - PLFS Quarterly Bulletin for April-June 2026

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) quarterly bulletin for April-June 2026 reported an overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) of 54.6% for persons aged 15 years and above. The corresponding figure in the previous quarter was 55.5%. Urban LFPR remained at 50.2%, while the urban Worker Population Ratio remained at 46.8% and the urban Unemployment Rate was broadly stable at 6.7%.

The bulletin also reported that the share of regular wage or salaried employees increased from 15.5% to 16.1% in rural areas and from 48.9% to 49.3% in urban areas. Since January 2025, the redesigned PLFS has generated monthly and quarterly labour indicators under the Current Weekly Status framework. Economy & Intellectual Property - MSME-DPIIT MoU for GI Products

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the commercialisation, quality standardisation and market access of Indian Geographical Indication (GI) products. The collaboration strengthens the One District One Product (ODOP) ecosystem and aims to support artisans, weavers and producer collectives.

The joint initiatives include onboarding GI collectives and authorised users onto ONDC and GeM under a dedicated Bharat GI banner, along with GI pavilions at national and international trade events. DPIIT remains the nodal department for GI registration and legal protection under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. This distinction between legal protection and commercialisation is an important exam point.

Economy & Infrastructure - Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme

The Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS) was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27 with a proposed outlay of ₹10,000 crore over five years. The scheme is intended to establish a globally competitive domestic container-manufacturing ecosystem, reduce import dependence and strengthen supply-chain resilience.

India imports nearly 2 million empty containers every year to meet domestic demand and repositioning needs. CMAS supports new greenfield facilities, expansion of brownfield units, operational competitiveness, testing infrastructure, skilling and capacity building. It targets annual domestic manufacturing capacity of up to 7.5 lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). TEU is the standard unit used to measure container capacity, with a 20-foot container as the reference unit.

Science & Environment - Unusual Ozone Concentration over North Bay of Bengal

Scientists detected an unusually high concentration of ozone in the upper atmosphere over the North Bay of Bengal. The finding provides evidence for studying how air currents transport ozone through the stratosphere and how atmospheric circulation redistributes ozone over the Indian subtropical region.

The research used atmospheric radars, weather balloons, satellites and advanced atmospheric models under the Phase-I NetRAD-ASMA campaign. An indigenously developed 206.5 MHz Stratosphere-Troposphere radar at ARIES, Nainital, contributed observations along with radars at Haringhata, Gadanki and Kochi. The ozone layer normally reaches its maximum concentration at roughly 25-30 km altitude and protects life by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation. The findings were published in Earth and Space Science by the American Geophysical Union.

Science & Health - AI-Assisted GrivaVision Cervical Screening Technology

The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology entered into an agreement with Griva Healthcare to support manufacturing and commercialisation of GrivaVision, an indigenously developed portable digital colposcope with AI-assisted capabilities for early detection of cervical pre-cancerous lesions.

GrivaVision combines a high-definition camera, display, optics and indigenous AI-enabled software in a portable platform. It is designed in accordance with WHO-approved Automated Visual Evaluation standards and its software is ABDM-compliant, allowing integration with India's digital-health ecosystem. The device is classified as a Class B non-invasive medical device and more than 50% of its components are currently sourced indigenously. The project is intended to make screening more accessible in primary and community healthcare settings.

Polity & International Travel - 11 More International Ports Added for E-Visa Entry

The Government notified 11 additional International Ports through which foreign nationals holding eligible electronic visas can enter India. The new additions comprise 9 land ports and 2 airports. With the latest addition, the total number of International Ports enabling entry of e-Visa holders increased to 88, including 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports.

The expansion is intended to simplify legitimate international travel while strengthening the technology and infrastructure supporting India's visa regime. Candidates should distinguish an e-Visa entry port from the place where an e-Visa application is processed. Under the Prime Minister Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, 76.95 lakh street vendors had availed more than 1.15 crore collateral-free loans amounting to ₹18,475 crore up to 12 July 2026. The scheme was launched on 1 June 2020 to provide working-capital term loans to urban street vendors.

An Indian School of Business assessment reported that PM SVANidhi was the first bank loan for 95% of beneficiaries in its 2023 study. A later 2025 study found average annualised business income among PM SVANidhi borrowers grew by around 20% between 2023 and 2025. The scheme therefore combines formal credit access, credit-history building, business recovery and digital-payment adoption. It should not be confused with a grant programme because the support is structured through repayable loan tranches.
