Overview of PGET 2026
Gauhati University has invited online applications for the Gauhati University Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET) 2026. The entrance test is for admission to postgraduate programmes at Gauhati University and its affiliated colleges for the academic year 2026-2027.
Applications must be submitted through the Gauhati University Samarth admission portal. The official admission notice is dated 26 May 2026 and the online application portal opened on 6 June 2026.
The PGET 2026 will be held as an offline entrance examination on 3, 4 and 5 July 2026.

The official notice says affiliated colleges will announce their own PG admission schedule and commencement of classes at their convenience.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility is programme-specific. For many traditional programmes, the official notice requires FYUGP or graduate candidates with at least 24 credits in the relevant subject with Major, Honours or Regular Course, depending on the programme.
Candidates who appeared or are appearing in the 6th semester B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. or B.Voc. examinations in 2026 and are waiting for results are eligible to appear in PGET 2026 and may receive provisional admission if selected.
Candidates with backlog in earlier semesters are also allowed to appear in PGET 2026 and may receive provisional admission if selected. However, such candidates must submit the final grade sheet or mark sheet within 7 days of the result being declared. Failure to submit it within the stated time will result in withdrawal of the seat.
Candidates must also satisfy the minimum eligibility criteria during document verification. Merely appearing in PGET 2026 does not give any right to admission.

Reservation Policy
For Traditional Programmes, the official notice states that the seat reservation policy for the university in the 2026-2027 session will be:
- 50% seats for Gauhati University candidates.
- 50% seats for Other University candidates, including Gauhati University.
- For M.Sc. Geology, the ratio is 30 for GU candidates and 70 open for all universities including GU candidates.
- Interdisciplinary programme seats remain open to all candidates irrespective of university affiliation.
Other reservation of seats will be as per Government of Assam rules and Gauhati University provisions.

The notice states that OBC / MOBC reservation is enhanced from 15% to 27% for non-creamy layer candidates, and that Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi and Tea Tribe community reservations are within the 27% OBC / MOBC reservation as per Government of Assam notification.
Non-Statutory Reservation Quotas
The notification also mentions supernumerary or reserved quota provisions for candidates from North East India excluding Assam, sons and daughters of GU employees, sons and daughters of retired GU employees, fringe village quota, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, NCC, NSS and sons and daughters of ex-defence personnel.
Candidates seeking admission under non-statutory quota and differently-abled categories must fill the additional prescribed form available on the Gauhati University website and submit it with the printed application and required self-attested testimonials to Room No. 14, Office of the Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University, Jalukbari, Guwahati - 781014, in person or by post before commencement of the entrance test.
Reserved-seat candidates must be permanent residents of Assam and must produce PRC at the time of admission.
Selection Process
All candidates must appear in PGET 2026 for admission to postgraduate programmes at Gauhati University and its affiliated colleges.
Selection of eligible candidates will be solely based on PGET 2026 scores. Preference for admission to the relevant programme will be given to candidates who obtain higher marks in PGET 2026.
In case of a tie, candidates will be selected based on performance in the last Board, Council or University examination.
Admission will be provisional until candidates produce relevant original documents and certificates before the respective department during admission. If a candidate fails to meet the minimum eligibility criteria during document verification, the candidature will be cancelled.
Admission Procedure
Admission to academic departments of Gauhati University will be held over 2 days:
- Traditional Subjects on the first day.
- Interdisciplinary Subjects on the second day.
The schedule and procedure for admission will be notified on the Gauhati University website along with the list of provisionally selected candidates prepared by the concerned department and approved by the Admission Committee.
Admission and other fees must be paid through the online payment system of Gauhati University. The notification also mentions that the fee waiver scheme will be as per Assam Government notification.
