Assam & Census - Houselisting Operation Begins for Census 2027
The Houselisting Operation and Housing Census of Census 2027 began in Assam on 17 August 2026 and will continue till 15 September 2026. Trained enumerators will visit households to collect or confirm house-listing and housing details after the Self Enumeration window on se.census.gov.in closed on 16 August 2026.
Census information is protected under the Census Act, 1948. The last official Assam update had suspended Census training and preparatory work in flood-affected Sivasagar and Charaideo until further orders. For exams, treat Census 2027 as a two-stage exercise: Phase I is the Houselisting and Housing Census; the later Population Enumeration is a separate field operation. Do not confuse online Self Enumeration with the door-to-door houselisting that has now started.

Cooperation & Rural Economy - Alwar Dairy Plant and District Cooperative Banks
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of a Saras milk-processing plant at Alwar with an initial capacity of 3 lakh litres per day, to be raised to 5 lakh litres per day. Four Saras dairy plants were commissioned in Bhilwara, Jaipur, Pali and Rajsamand at a total cost of ₹274 crore.
Four district cooperative banks were launched in Phalodi, Balotra, Didwana-Kuchaman and Pratapgarh. The same programme transferred more than ₹667 crore to about 67 lakh farmers under the Mukhyamantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and ₹152 crore under crop insurance through DBT. Foundation stones were laid for 954 works worth ₹6,453 crore across 17 districts. The exam hook is cooperative dairying and short-term rural credit under Sahkar se Samriddhi, not a Central Budget announcement.

Tribal Development - National Framework for ITDAs and ITDPs
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs and NITI Aayog released the National Framework for Strengthening of ITDAs and ITDPs and the accompanying Operational Guidelines. The publications convert a nationwide consultative exercise into an actionable reform roadmap for Integrated Tribal Development Agencies and Projects, the principal field institutions for last-mile tribal development.
The diagnostic exercise assessed institutions across 15 parameters in five institutional domains and produced an Evidence-Weighted ITDA Diagnostic Scoring Framework. The documents sit alongside large saturation missions such as DAJGUA and PM-JANMAN, but they are not themselves a cash-transfer scheme. The exam distinction is between a field delivery institution (ITDA/ITDP) and an umbrella tribal-development campaign.

Cybersecurity & Skills - NIELIT Launches CYBER KUSHTI 2026
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), under MeitY, launched CYBER KUSHTI 2026, a national cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence hackathon. Unlike conventional Capture-the-Flag contests, it tests the ability to evaluate, prioritise and defend security decisions, including the rejection of false machine-generated findings.
The competition is being held with the ISAC Foundation under the National Security Database, with CERT-In as Knowledge Partner. It has three rounds: Akhada, Dangal and Kesari. NIELIT is a Deemed-to-be University with constituent campuses that include Aizawl, Agartala, Imphal, Itanagar and Kohima, giving the institution a direct Northeast footprint. For exams, link the event with human judgment in AI-assisted cyber-security, not with a new statute.

Environment & International Relations - BRICS Environment Meetings in New Delhi
India is hosting the BRICS Senior Officers' Meeting of the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development on 17 August 2026, followed by the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers' Meeting on 18 August 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The meetings fall under India's BRICS Chairship theme, Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.
India has identified four Environment Working Group priorities: sustainable lifestyles; afforestation, forest-fire management and disaster resilience; circular economy, including Extended Producer Responsibility; and people-centric climate adaptation based on traditional knowledge. The Environment Working Group was established in 2015 in Moscow; the Contact Group was set up in 2024. The exam hook is India's chairship agenda, not a signed treaty.

Banking & Economy - RBI Advances Closure of FCNR(B) Swap Facility
The Reserve Bank of India decided to close its special forex-swap facility for fresh Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) deposits on 31 August 2026, a month earlier than planned, after an encouraging response. Official and financial reporting put FCNR(B) mobilisation at US$ 52.3 billion, with total inflows under the three-channel facility at US$ 56.846 billion till 13 August 2026.
Swaps against eligible FCNR(B) deposits may still be undertaken till 11 September 2026. The ECB and OFCB windows remain open until 31 December 2026. The facility, introduced on 8 June 2026, is a plain buy/sell swap covering the principal, not the interest. FCNR(B) deposits are fully repatriable foreign-currency deposits of non-residents. Distinguish this liquidity-and-stability tool from a change in the policy repo rate.

Polity - Shakti Ki Sapta Dhara Framework
In the 80th Independence Day address, the Prime Minister invoked Shakti Ki Sapta Dhara, or seven streams of power, as a reform framework for Viksit Bharat by 2047. The official English rendering lists the seven streams as manufacturing power, agriculture and food production, technology and innovation, Gati Shakti, defence power (Raksha Shakti), the green and blue economy, and soft power.
Manufacturing is placed first, with emphasis on complete domestic value chains rather than output volume alone. Technology and innovation covers AI, quantum technology, space, robotics and data centres. Soft power includes yoga, Ayurveda, the creative economy and tourism. For exams, remember the seven-stream list and that Sapta Dhara is a policy framework announced from the Red Fort, not a new Central Sector Scheme with a notified outlay.

Energy - 100 GW Nuclear-Power Target by 2047
The same official address restated India's nuclear-energy objective: 100 gigawatts of nuclear-power capacity by 2047, with a target of starting five new nuclear reactors within this decade. Nuclear power was framed as a major instrument of energy security for electricity-intensive uses such as chips, Artificial Intelligence and data centres.
The 100 GW figure is a long-horizon capacity target, not the present installed nuclear capacity. Candidates should keep it separate from non-fossil share-of-capacity milestones already covered in recent editions. The examination value lies in the terminal year, the reactor-commissioning target and the link between nuclear power and digital-economy electricity demand.

Defence & International Relations - COAS Visit and Honorary Rank Tradition
Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth began an official visit to Nepal from 17 to 19 August 2026. The official programme includes a wreath-laying at the Army Pavilion, Tundikhel, a Guard of Honour at the Nepali Army Headquarters and an Investiture Ceremony at which the President of Nepal confers the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepali Army.
The honorary rank is a unique reciprocal tradition between the Indian and Nepali Armies. The visit is intended to deepen defence cooperation and military-to-military ties. For exams, the key facts are the honorary-rank tradition, the Tundikhel location and the distinction between a ceremonial military honour and a combat deployment.

Governance & RTI - CIC Case Disposal and Portal Upgrade
The Central Information Commission stated that it had disposed of 768 Second Appeals and Complaints between 1 and 12 August 2026, against a media claim of only three disposals. The gap was attributed to the ongoing upgrade of the Commission's Second Appeals and Complaints Portal, which was scheduled to go live on 17 August 2026.
Online filing had already been resumed from 4 August 2026 through dss.cic.gov.in. The CIC is the apex second-appeal authority under the Right to Information Act, 2005. For exams, separate a second appeal before the CIC from a first appeal before the departmental First Appellate Authority, and treat the portal upgrade as an e-governance measure rather than an amendment of the RTI Act.
