Economy - Consumer Price Index for August 2026
The National Statistical Office released provisional Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for August 2026. The all-India year-on-year combined CPI inflation rate was 4.82%, while Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) inflation was 5.95%. The current CPI series uses 2024=100 as its base year.
CPI measures changes in retail prices faced by consumers. It is different from the Wholesale Price Index, which tracks price changes at the wholesale stage. For examinations, remember that CPI and CFPI are separate measures: CFPI specifically captures food-price movements. The RBI's flexible inflation-targeting framework uses CPI inflation as its nominal anchor, with a 4% target and a tolerance band of 2% to 6%.

Trade and Economy - India-MERCOSUR Electronic Certificates of Origin
India and MERCOSUR signed the First Additional Protocol to their Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to facilitate electronic Certificates of Origin. The protocol amends Article 16 of Annex III on Rules of Origin so that qualifying electronic Certificates of Origin have the same legal validity and value as paper certificates.
A Certificate of Origin helps establish whether a product meets the origin rules required to claim a preferential tariff under a trade agreement. The protocol supports paperless documentation, but candidates should note an important legal distinction: it will enter into force only after the parties complete their respective internal procedures and notify one another. Signing a protocol is therefore not the same as its immediate operational entry into force.

International Relations and Energy - Power Export to Nepal
The Ministry of Power approved the export of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours a day, from 00:00 to 18:00, for the period from 13 September to 31 December 2026. The approval covers up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The two ceilings add up to 654 MW. MW is a unit of power capacity, whereas MWh measures energy delivered over a period of time. The approval followed flood-related damage to Nepal's hydropower infrastructure and illustrates the role of cross-border grids in regional energy cooperation. The quantum for January 2027 is to be reviewed in December 2026.

Social Justice - Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment reported that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) had reached more than 34.54 crore citizens, including over 13.70 crore youth and 10.64 crore women. More than 1.67 lakh Nasha Mukti Mitras had joined the campaign, alongside over 31.40 lakh awareness and outreach activities.
NMBA is an awareness and community-participation initiative directed at drug-demand reduction. It should not be confused with a criminal-law enforcement operation against drug supply. For objective questions, connect the campaign with prevention, awareness, treatment and rehabilitation, and with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Human Rights and South-South Cooperation - NHRC-ITEC Programme
The fifth Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Executive Capacity-Building Programme on Human Rights for senior functionaries of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) of the Global South began in New Delhi. It is organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs.
The programme is a capacity-building exercise, not an adjudicatory proceeding. Its examination value lies in the institutions involved: ITEC is an instrument of India's development partnership administered by the Ministry of External Affairs, while the NHRC is a statutory body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Such programmes also illustrate India's South-South cooperation through training and institutional exchange.

Polity and International Relations - Chief Election Commissioner in Bhutan
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reached Thimphu on a three-day visit to Bhutan. The visit is intended to strengthen institutional cooperation between the Election Commission of India and the Election Commission of Bhutan, and includes engagement connected with Bhutan's National Voters' Day.
For examinations, this update links democratic institutions with India's neighbourhood engagement. The Election Commission of India is a constitutional body; Article 324 of the Constitution vests the superintendence, direction and control of elections in the Election Commission. Do not confuse the constitutional position of the Election Commission with the statutory status of bodies such as the NHRC.

Transport and Public Service - National Highways Helpline 1033
The National Highways Authority of India is pursuing a technology upgrade for the 1033 National Highways Helpline through an Expression of Interest for a next-generation helpline and call-centre system. The proposed system is intended to use AI-assisted multilingual handling, real-time location information and smarter dispatch coordination, while retaining human operators for decisions requiring judgement.
The current-affairs point is the existing public-service helpline: 1033 is associated with assistance on National Highways, including emergencies and incidents. An Expression of Interest is an early procurement and consultation stage; it is not proof that the upgraded system has already been deployed. NHAI functions under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and was established under the NHAI Act, 1988.

Defence Technology - IAF Dronathon 2026
The Indian Air Force's Dronathon 2026 began at the Pokhran Range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The event brings domestic manufacturers, start-ups and innovators together to demonstrate Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS), including operational demonstrations.
The stated focus areas include surveillance and reconnaissance, autonomous operations, swarm technologies and electronic warfare. For examinations, distinguish UAS from CUAS: the former refers to unmanned aerial platforms, while the latter concerns systems designed to detect, track or counter unauthorised drones. Pokhran is in Rajasthan and is also associated with India's nuclear tests of 1974 and 1998.

Sports - India Wins the Women's Asia Cup
India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final to win a record-extending eighth Women's Asia Cup title. India made 183 for 5, and Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111. Shafali Verma scored 68 and Smriti Mandhana made 59 in the final.
The result is a completed international sporting event with direct examination value. Candidates should retain the champion, runner-up, winning margin and the record eighth title. Avoid treating a continental tournament result as an ICC World Cup result: the Women's Asia Cup is organised within Asian cricket.

International Affairs - European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi
The European Arctic Summit was held in Rovaniemi, Finland, on 13 and 14 September 2026. European leaders discussed the Arctic's growing geopolitical importance and the European Union's strategic approach to the region.
The Arctic is not merely a climate topic. Melting sea ice, emerging sea routes, natural resources, indigenous communities and strategic competition make it relevant to environment, security and international relations. The Arctic Council is the principal intergovernmental forum promoting cooperation in the region; it was established in 1996 and has its secretariat in Tromso, Norway. The European Union is not an Arctic Council member state, so candidates should distinguish the EU's Arctic policy from Council membership.
